Olódùmarè / Olorun / Olofi
Philosophical Summary
Olódùmarè (also known as Olorun or Olofi) is the unique, transcendent, and supreme God of the Yoruba theological system. He is the infinite source of all 'Àṣẹ' (the divine energy that brings things into being and sustains existence). Unlike the Orishas, who possess human-like personalities, complex histories, and specific physical appetites, Olódùmarè is a remote and all-encompassing force that exists beyond the limitations of gender, race, or physical form. He is the 'Architect of the Universe' who delegated the creation of the physical world and the governance of various natural elements to the Orishas. However, Olódùmarè remains the final authority to whom both humans and Orishas must ultimately return. He is the 'Silent Witness' who observes the character (Iwa) of every living being and the final judge of destiny. To invoke Olódùmarè is not to ask for a specific favor as one would with a local deity, but to acknowledge the profound unity, order, and mystery of the entire cosmos. He represents the monotheistic core that anchors the deep diversity of the Orisha pantheon.
Overview
Olódùmarè is the Supreme Creator and the Infinite Source of all existence. He is the singular God who exists beyond time and space, providing the 'Ase' that allows the universe to function.
Key Teachings
- Character is Destiny: Olódùmarè teaches that the ultimate 'offering' is a good character (Iwa Pele). No ritual can override the judgment of a malicious heart.
- Unity in Diversity: He represents the one source from which all the many Orishas flow, reminding us that all paths eventually lead back to the center.
- The Breath as Gift: The fact that we breathe (Emi) is a direct participation in his divinity; every breath is a debt to the creator.
Relationships
The creator and master of all Orishas; he delegated the molding of humans to Obatala and the teaching of wisdom to Orunmila. Every Orisha must seek his 'Ase' before beginning their work on earth, making him the ultimate boss of the cosmic hierarchy.
Cultural Safety
This metadata observes the highest level of reverence and public safety. It suppresses the 'unspoken name' used only in extreme situations, the secret rituals of the 'Ori' creation at the beginning of time, and the mechanisms by which he retrieves the 'Emi' at the moment of death.
Domains And Symbols
He governs the entire universe, the cycles of creation, and individual human destiny (Ori). His primary symbols are the sun, representing divine light, and the vast, open sky, representing his omnipresence.
Names And Syncretism
Known as Olorun (Owner of the Sky) and Olofi (The Lawgiver). In the diaspora, he is directly equated with the Christian/Catholic concept of the Father Creator. His name itself implies the 'Infinite Gourd of Fate.'
Offerings And Taboos
He does not accept material offerings or animals. He is honored through prayer, ethical living, and the fulfillment of one's sacred purpose. His primary taboos are the violation of natural laws and the betrayal of the human soul's integrity.

Transliteration
Oh-loh-doo-mah-reh, oh-bah toh gah joo loh. Ee-yeen foon aw, Eh-leh-dah aw-roon oh-oon ah-yeh. Ee-weh toh maw, oh-oon-roon toh rahn. Jeh kee un ree ah-yah reh-reh law-daw reh. Ah-dah-maw-dah, oh-bah toh joo gbogbo oh-bah loh.
Tradition Perspectives
Olódùmarè is acknowledged in every single prayer and ritual but is never 'fed' through animal sacrifice directly. The belief is that He does not have a physical stomach to satisfy; He is satisfied only by the quality of a person's character. In Isese, He is the fountain from which all traditional authority flows.
Syncretized with God the Father or the Holy Spirit. Olofi is viewed as the aspect of God that interacts directly with the Orishas and high-level priests (Babalawos). It is through Olofi's mandate that the Orishas operate on earth. He is the ultimate sealer of any spiritual contract.
In Candomble, Olorun is the supreme owner of the sky and the breath of life (Inaé). He is respected as the distant grandfather of all Orisha lineages. In the Angola nation, the name Zambi is more common, reflecting the Bantu-Kongo roots of the supreme being concept.
