The Sweeping of the Heavens

Philosophical Summary

A story where the minor Orishas neglected their duties, filling the heavens with debris and causing misfortune to rain on earth. Orunmila, divining Ogbè Ọ̀wọ́nrin, was commanded by Olodumare to craft the first sacred broom. He swept the heavens, allowing the pure light to shine on earth again. This established the ritual of spiritual sweeping.

Summary

Divine negligence caused a 'dust' to settle over the earth until the first broom restored cosmic clarity.

Interpretation

Ogbè Ọ̀wọ́nrin is the Odu of removing obstacles and clearing the path. It establishes that cleanliness is a spiritual act. We sweep not just to remove dirt, but to invite the light of the Creator back into our space.

English

The minor spirits became lazy, leaving the heavenly courtyards unkept. The accumulated spiritual 'dust' fell to earth as blockages, confusion, and illness. Olodumare commanded Orunmila to resolve the crisis. Under Ogbè Ọ̀wọ́nrin, he tied the first broom from the midribs of palm leaves. As he swept the clouds, the debris of misfortune was brushed away, and the sun reached the people again.
