Sacred Verses
English
In the time when the living had lost their way and forgotten their fathers, Orunmila consulted Ọ̀yẹ̀kú Méjì. He was told to weave a cloth that covered the physical face but revealed the spiritual essence. The first Egungun mask was crafted and worn by a chosen initiate. When the ancestors saw the mask, they occupied the cloth, speaking to their children and providing the 'Protection of the Veil' against the darkness of the forest. This was the birth of the Egungun festival.
