Orí

The most important Orisha; your personal spirit, inner head, and the seat of your destiny.

Philosophical Summary

Orí is the spirit of individuality and the architect of personal experience. Unlike the other Orishas who are primordial forces of nature or deified ancestors, Orí is the 'Orisha within.' It is often described as a silent, watchful companion that resides at the crown of the head. Orí is neither 'hot' (aggressive) nor 'cool' (passive) by nature, but reflects the state of the individual's character (Ìwà). The story of Orí begins in the House of Ajala Mopin, the divine potter in Heaven. Every soul, before departing for Earth, chooses an Orí—some choose ones that are strong and durable, others choose ones that are fragile. This choice determines the 'capacity' of a person's life. However, once on Earth, the Orí must be constantly 'fed' with cool water, character, and sacrifice to remain aligned with its highest potential. Orí is the only Orisha that will never abandon a person; even when the Great Orishas return to their own shrines, Orí stays until the very end. Its power lies in its authority to sanction all other spiritual interventions. To serve Orí is to seek self-mastery, clarity of thought, and the humility to acknowledge that your greatest ally is your own spirit.
