Ancient times were harsh and hot. Mankind and Orishas were often injured by thorns and burning ground. Ọbàtálá observed a snail (Igbin) crossing a jagged path. Instead of rushing, the snail move with deliberate patience, releasing a cool fluid that coated the thorns and cooled the soil. The snail emerged unscathed. Ọbàtálá recognized this as the metaphysical energy he wanted to govern humanity: unhurried, peaceful, and smoothing out life's edges. He decreed the snail his favorite sacrifice, whose fluid would serve as medicine to cool the head (Ori) and restore peace in times of conflict or madness.
