The Fire of the Eyes

Philosophical Summary

Tells how humanity originally stumbled blindly even during the day because their 'inner eyes' were closed. Orunmila brought the 'charcoal of Ìwòrì' and the 'white cloth of Ogbè' to open the third eye of the Babalawos, separating the seers from the blind.

Summary

Divine intervention provides Babalawos with the 'Fire of the Eyes' needed to see beyond the physical veil.

Interpretation

Vision is a gift of Ìwòrì Méjì. It teaches that 'The eye is a fire that must be fed.' True perception requires the discipline to look through the smoke of illusion to find the core truth.

English

In the beginning, people could only see physical objects. They walked into spiritual traps and could not see the intentions of others. Orunmila descended with the 'Spirit of Ìwòrì.' He took sacred charcoal and touched the foreheads of his chosen students, then washed them with the white cloth of Ogbè. This activated their inner vision, allowing them to see the shadows of the future and the light of destiny. This established the standard that a Babalawo must 'see' what the common eye cannot.
