The Traitorous Best Friend
Philosophical Summary
Despite outwardly projecting loyalty, Ọ̀rúnmìlà's best friend was consumed by jealousy. He dug a deep pit on Ọ̀rúnmìlà's daily path, covering it with reeds. Ọ̀rúnmìlà's morning divination (Òdí Méjì) warned him: 'The one smiling widest is digging your grave.' He was instructed to walk with a heavy staff, pounding the earth. The vibrations triggered the trap from a safe distance. The traitor, feigning shock and rushing to 'save' him, lost his footing and fell into his own trap, breaking his neck instantly.
Summary
A story of cosmic karma where a man's own malice becomes his executioner through the intervention of the oracle.
Interpretation
Òdí Méjì represents 'The Wall' that protects and 'The Trap' that binds. It teaches that we must never assume absolute loyalty based on words alone. The 'rhythmic pounding' of the staff represents the active vibration of spiritual protection that exposes the 'soft ground' of betrayal before we step on it.
Sacred Verses
English
Orunmila's best friend publicly sang his praises while privately rotting with envy. He dug a massive pit on Orunmila's path and masked it. Orunmila cast Òdí Méjì. The Odu said: 'You are blocked from seeing the danger behind you. Perform the cleaning and walk with the staff of thunder.' As Orunmila pounded the staff, the ground collapsed before him. The friend, terrified his plot was exposed, ran towards the hole screaming 'I'll save you!' but plummeted into the darkness of his own creation.
