Interpretation
The brilliance of this Ẹsẹ Ifá lies in its structural explanation of Yoruba cosmology. In traditional Ifá theology, it is stressed that initiating to a powerful external Orisha is beneficial, but utterly useless if the person's own Orí (Destiny) actively rejects the blessing. The Orishas are seen as powerful allies who can walk with you on the road of life, but this verse notes that at some point, 'All the Orishas eventually turned back.' They have their own domains to rule. The Orí, however, makes the entire journey from birth to death. Therefore, Èjì Ogbè commands that the seeker must deeply propitiate and feed their own head (Ìbọrí) first.
