Lies carry a spiritual weight that 'debases' the currency of leadership. Eshu is the one who monitors our contracts with the divine and the community. To lie to Eshu is to invite the 'Spirit of Confusion' into one's own house.
Sacred Verses
English
King Oloyo tried to bypass the traditional offerings for the royal market by telling Eshu he had no gold. Eshu, knowing the King's vaults were full, agreed: 'If you have no gold, then your words carry no weight.' That very night, everything the King said was heard by his subjects as nonsense or insults. Rumors of war and betrayal spread because the King's 'voice' had lost its truth. Only when the King publicly paid his debt and confessed his deceit did Eshu restore the clarity of his speech and the peace of the market.
