The Diviner Who Refused to Lie

Philosophical Summary

A narrative where a powerful but corrupt King summoned all the diviners in the land and demanded a favorable reading regarding a war he wanted to wage unjustly. Every diviner, out of fear, lied to the King—except Orunmila, who divined Ogbè Ọ̀bàrà. He told the King the absolute truth: that the war would result in his death and the ruin of his kingdom. Enraged, the King ordered Orunmila imprisoned. The King went to war and was immediately defeated and killed. The people, realizing Orunmila was the only one who spoke the truth, released him and made him their chief counselor. This teaches the ultimate value of integrity (Ogbè) overtaking deception (Ọ̀bàrà).

Summary

A King's hubris is shattered by the unwavering truth of Ogbè Ọ̀bàrà as Orunmila risks his life for the integrity of the Oracle.

Interpretation

Ogbè Ọ̀bàrà is the Odu of the 'Transparent King.' It teaches that while lies may provide temporary comfort to the powerful, the truth of Ifá is unyielding. Integrity (Ogbè) is the light that survives after the fire of arrogance (Ọ̀bàrà) has burned out.

English

A tyrant king wanted to seize a neighbor's land. He gathered the seers and threatened death to anyone who prophesied failure. Fearing for their lives, the diviners told the King his victory was certain. Orunmila alone stood firm. He revealed Ogbè Ọ̀bàrà and warned: 'The King who hunts for what is not his will lose what he has.' He was dragged to the dungeons in chains. Not three days later, the King's army was decimated, and the King perished in the mud of the battlefield. The soldiers returned and fell at Orunmila's feet, begging him to lead them with truth.
