Ìlù kì í dún fúnra rẹ̀ (The Unbeaten Drum)
Philosophical Summary
Nothing 'just happens'—every disruption or 'sound' is a signal. In Ọ̀kànràn Méjì, the heart is compared to a drum. Just as a drum remains silent unless struck, the 'unbeaten drum' of conscience or intuition only sounds when there is movement in the unseen world. It warns against ignoring internal alarms or sudden, unexplained events; they are the spirits communicating a necessary correction or looming danger.
Meaning
Cause and effect govern the universe; unexplained events are calls for deeper investigation.
Usage Context
Used to encourage someone to investigate the root cause of sudden trouble or to trust their sudden gut feelings (heart beating).
Sacred Verses
Yorùbá
Ìlù kì í dún fúnra rẹ̀, bí kò bá ní ẹgbẹ́ lẹ́yìn. Agogo kì í dún, bí kò bá ní okùn.
English
A drum does not sound by itself, unless it has a source behind it. A bell does not ring, unless it has a clapper. If you hear the vibration, someone is striking the instrument.
