Ṣàngó / Xangô / Changó
The Orisha of Thunder, Lightning, and Justice; deified fourth King of Oyo.
Philosophical Summary
Ṣàngó is an Orisha of immense charisma and intense power. He is often depicted as a majestic warrior-king dressed in vibrant red and white, wielding a double-headed wooden axe (Oṣé Ṣàngó). His temperament is one of quick fire—passionate, assertive, and sometimes impulsive—but always governed by a deep sense of ultimate justice. The story of Ṣàngó is one of kingship and remorse. As the fourth Alafin of Oyo, he was a brilliant but volatile ruler. After a period of conflict and the loss of his kingdom, he was transformed into an Orisha of the sky. His lightning is not merely a weapon; it is the manifestation of the divine 'Àṣẹ' (Word) that strikes down lies and restores truth. He is the master of the Bata drums, using rhythm to communicate with the heavens. To serve Ṣàngó is to seek a life of integrity and to understand that power must be balanced by the weight of responsibility.
