The Pumpkins of Destiny
Philosophical Summary
In the ancient city of Ife, the high Babalawos gathered regularly at the palace of Olofin. Obara Meji was the poorest among them, often wearing tattered clothes and unable to provide the lavish feasts others did. They mocked him constantly. One day, Olofin gave each Babalawo a pumpkin as a gift. The others, finding the pumpkins heavy and 'cheap,' gave theirs to Obara Meji as a final insult. Obara Meji humbly accepted them all. Upon returning home, he discovered that Olofin had hidden diamonds, gold, and jewels inside the pumpkins. This sudden wealth allowed Obara Meji to buy the finest horses, clothes, and eventually, the crown of the kingdom itself.
Summary
A story of sudden prosperity where the rejected 'burdens' of others reveal hidden treasure for the humble.
Interpretation
Indicates that a 'Turnaround' is near. Wealth in Obara Meji is won through humble acceptance (the heavy pumpkins) of what others reject. What looks like a burden is actually the vehicle for liberation.
Sacred Verses
English
Obara Meji lived in rags while other Babalawos flaunted their wealth. They mocked him at Olofin's palace. Olofin gifted each a pumpkin. Insulted, the rich Babalawos stacked their pumpkins on Obara Meji's back. He lugged them home only to find them filled with gold, diamonds, and pearls. He transformed into the wealthiest King, proving that the 'Head' chosen by the Creator outlasts the pride of men.
